Gothic beautyIt has taken us a while to publish a second post about our trip to Exeter in April, but we hope you’ll agree that it has been worth the wait! As we reported earlier in the year, it was our first visit to the Devon city and we were overwhelmed by the beauty of its buildings. The jewel in Exeter’s architectural crown has to be the magnificent cathedral. One of the world’s finest examples of gothic architecture, it’s a breath taking structure that dominates the square in which it sits. Built over 600 years ago, Exeter Cathedral suffered damage during the dissolution of the monasteries, the English Civil War and the Second World War, but the majority of the building was thankfully left standing. The cathedral is a photographer’s dream and we spent a good couple of hours capturing shots of the impressive stained glass windows and the recently refurbished 17th century organ. We were also left with sore necks during our visit as it’s impossible to not constantly look up to admire the stupendous vaulted ceiling, the longest in England. Even if you don’t have a religious bone in your body, it’s hard to not get caught up in the atmosphere of such a spiritual building as Exeter cathedral. Virginia says I use the phrase ‘history oozes out of every pore’ too much in our blog posts, but I can’t think of a better description!
Put a visit to Exeter Cathedral on your bucket list!
