A little bit of New York in Bristol
Before my little went off on holiday with her grandparents, I wanted her to see something quite magical; Do Ho Suh's art work commissioned by Bristol Museum and Art Gallery. The Korean artist has recreated in fabric the whole corridor and staircase of his home in New York. The result is a dreamy vision that completely hit the spot with both my daughter and myself. Entering the structure creates a floating sensation, as if gravity had somehow disappeared, and I wish the whole flat had been made for us to explore! I dread to think how much time it took Do Ho Suh to create it... It was like walking in someone else's dream. The fabric walls and stairs are completely see-through and a member of staff explained to us how Do Ho Suh wanted to illustrate the contrast between the solid and thick walls of European style houses versus the light screen panels found in his home country. The detail in which pipes and knobs and other intricate things have been realised is truly amazing and I definitely recommend you see it with your own eyes soon! The artist will be speaking in the museum at lunch time tomorrow, so I might drop by if I can! Nina.
